In may 1946 John Caldwell, stranded in Panama after the war, set out for Sydney to rejoin his wife Mary whom he had not seen since their 3 day honeymoon over a year before. Unable to find any other form of transport he had to resort to single handed sailing. He spent 10 days learning the rudiments of of sailing and navigation from a book before embarking on a 9000 mile journey aboard the 29 ft 'Pagan'. He suffered ship-wreck, sharks and storms. Witty and moving. Read this book. Recommended. PB.
