PLAN OF THE CITY AND CASTLE OF CHESTER, 1745. by Alexander De Lavaux

This reproduction is taken from an original document held within the Archives of the UK Hydrographic Office, Taunton, Somerset.

Alexander De Lavaux published two maps of Chester in 1745. The first was a large scale plan of Chester Castle which amply demonstrated his training as a military engineer, and the second was this general town plan. His attention to detail and artistic style combine to make this map an attractive example of 18th century cartography. Among the notable features represented on the plan are the Rood Eye race course which is still in operation today, and St Wereberg's Cathedral which is one of the many outstanding buildings of this histroric city. The map has two elabourate cartouche which display the coat of arms of the city of Chester, and those of George, Earl of Cholmondeley, Lord Lieutenant of Cheshire to whom the map is dedicated.
