A General Chart of the Archipelago or Greek Islands
Complied in the Hydrographic Office from the Astronomical Observations and Trigonomical Positions of Captain Gauttier of the French Navy in the years 1818 & 1819
Captain P H Gauttier in the Chevrette, a French Government transport vessel, was charged to determine by observations made with the best instruments available at the time, the positions of the most prominent points in the Mediterranean and Black Seas, as well as to triangulate the Grecian Archipelago.
He began at Toulon, with four Chronometers on board, and measured with great accuracy the distance between Mount St. Elias on Milo, and Mount St. Elias on the Island of Zea. Distances between two other mountains were subsequently obtained, on the islands of Paros and Naxia, and from these points, the angles of the main triangles were measured, and whence all the positions of points in the Grecian Archipelago.
This Admiralty chart was published in November 1825, and was intended for sailing between the islands, there being very little depth information for sailing close inshore. Triangle symbols are shown at the positions of Gauttier's observations on the islands. The archipelago was surveyed between the years 1832 and 1857 by the British Admiralty, who then published a series of charts for navigating around the islands.
