Donald Crowhurst set out in 1968 on the first singlehanded non-stop around the world sailing race. His radioed reports led everyone to beleive that he was well in the lead. His vessel was later found drifting without the skipper in mid Atlantic. The whole thing had been an elaborate hoax.
