To celebrate it's seductive strangeness and beauty, Sea Chest have put together some of our favourite facts and surprising stats you may not have come across before...

#1. Only around 5% of the world's oceans have been discovered.

#2. 94% of life on earth is underwater.

#3. The Pacific ocean is the largest in the world, making up approximately 30% of the Earth's surface.

#4. The are 5.25 trillion pieces of plastic debris in the ocean... and counting.

#5. The Mid-Ocean Ridge is the longest chain of mountains in the world - spanning 65,000 km - it exists completely underwater.

#6. 90% of all volcanic activity happens in the ocean - specifically in the South Pacific.

#7. The Great Barrier Reef can be seen from the moon.

#8. Sea water isn't drinkable but sea ice is.

#9. One of the loudest ocean sounds ever was recorded in 1997 by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). It was named "The Bloop" and what made the sound is unknown.

#10. 50% of the oxygen we breathe comes from minuscule ocean plants called phytoplankton.

#11. 12 people have walked on the moon but only 3 people have been to the bottom of the Mariana Trench.

#12. The ghost fish is the deepest dwelling fish ever caught on camera. It was found at 8143 metres under the sea in the Mariana Trench.
