In 1675, Charles II founded the Royal Observatory at Greenwich with the aim of finding out the 'so-much desired longitude of places for perfecting the art of navigation'.
To this end, he appointed John Flamsteed as the first Astronomer Royal to map the stars accurately enough so that sailors could have reliable charts with which to navigate the seas.
Since Flamsteed, there have been fourteen Astronomers Royal, each of whom has contributed to the world's understanding of the stars, time and space. This book is a unique portrait of these great personalities and minds that changed the way we see the world.

As all of our Admiralty Charts are now Printed On Demand (the latest edition of charts when you order them), we can no longer refund the full cost of your order if you wish to return it. We will refund 40% of your order total in order to cover our costs.
