This Admiralty paper chart provides nautical coverage of the Northern part of the Baltic sea, including its easternmost arm, the Gulf of Finland. The Baltic Sea flowers out through the Danish straits, however this flow is complex. It mixes very slowly with the upper waters, resulting in a salinity (salt content) gradient from top to bottom, with most of the salt water remaining below 40 to 70m deep. The water level is generally more dependent on the regional wind situation than on tidal effects, however, tidal currents occur in narrow passages in the western parts of the Baltic Sea.
On the long-term average, the Baltic Sea is ice-covered at the annual maximum for about 45% of its surface area. Parts of the Gulf of Finland are frequently freezing, with ice ridges persisting until May. Some of the environmental problems affecting the Baltic Sea are at their most pronounced in the shallow Gulf of Finland.
